Week 3- Spleen

Spleen and how the emotions affect it

The main function of the Spleen is to help assist the Stomach with digestion by transforming and transporting food and is the basis for the production of Qi (energy) and blood. The Spleen is responsible for separation, transformation and movement of fluids. The clear goes to the lungs and is distributed to the skin, muscles. The unclear or turbid moves down into the Intestines where is it further separated and sent out as waste. If the Spleen function is impaired the fluids will not separate as they should and can accumulate as dampness or phlegm within the body such as edema.

The Spleen is in charge of holding the blood, If the spleen is healthy blood will circulate normally and stay within the vessels. When the spleen energy is not able to keep the blood within the vessels it can result in hemorrhage such as bruising.

The spleen is also responsible for the upright Qi (energy within the body); when the spleen qi function is weak there may be prolapse in various organs such as the bladder, anus, uterus for example.

The spleen houses the intellect that controls the mind for studying, memorizing, and concentration. The emotion associated with the spleen is worry/ pensiveness or overthinking; it is one of the most affected organs for students due to excessive studying. Just ask any Traditional Chinese medicine student LOL! Just checking to see if you were paying attention. Pensiveness and worry knot the Qi (energy) in the middle burner which is where the spleen in located resulting in poor digestion and bloating.

Signs/ symptoms of Spleen imbalance are fatigue, loss of appetite, poor digestion, abdominal distention, nausea, loose stools or diarrhea. weak muscles, pale lips. bruising, excess menstrual blood flow, organ prolapse such as uterine and anal prolapse (hemorrhoids).

Here are some suggestions to help with Spleen imbalance

• avoid cold foods, raw foods-these foods slow down the breaking down of foods

• try to incorporate fermented products such as kombucha, saurkraut, kimchi- these also have probiotics to help with “good gut” bacteria

• rest, meditate-take time for yourself to rejuvenate

Acupuncture and herbal formulas used together can be very beneficial to help restore the Spleen and improve your health. If you are experiencing any of the above symptoms, why not give acupuncture a try.
